● DOC & IGT: THE SYMBOLS OF WINE
----------------------------------------------------
The Italian wine production, as stipulated by the law 164/92, is divided into categories or names that make up an ideal quality pyramid.
At the base are table wines, common wines, produced from grapes or wines also of different varieties from different geographical areas without any restriction as regards grape utlilizzati and maximum yields per hectare. These wines must have an alcohol content of at least 10 ° and have no right to use any additional wording (the label shows the color - white, red, rosé - and the name or the name of the bottler).
At a higher level there are the wines IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) which correspond to large denominations, sometimes even extended to entire regions. The wines bearing this label are characterized as intermediate protection of the area of origin, the predominant grape variety and vintage to vintage nell'uvaggio, without further specific rules otherwise dictated by the product.
For an additional level we find the DOC wines (Denomination of Origin Controlled). The products concerned are about 700 and cover a large part of the national territory. Each contains the specifications, which relate to the territory from which the wine must come to DoC, the maximum quantity of production of grapes per hectare, the manner and timing of aging and aging as well as some analytical parameters that wine must have minimum (alcohol, acidity, etc..), even the percentage of wine which can be obtained from a Kg of grapes.
The diction is required on the label under the name of the wine for which the product specification establishes the area of cultivation, the oenological characteristics, chemical and organoleptic characteristics. The specifications also stipulate the method and duration of aging. In the DOC may be marked by a sub-area, the numbering of the bottle and definitions such as CLASSIC or SUPERIOR RESERVE.
Wines are subject to control by the committees set up by the Chamber of Commerce in order to check the exact correspondence between protocol and production.
WINES DOCG (Denomination of Origin Controlled and Guaranteed) represent the top of the pyramid.
There are currently thirty productions and are particularly valuable among which famous for Chianti, Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Franciacorta, and Taurasi just to name a few.
DOCG is a kind of SUPERDOC: the production rules are more rigid and provide Analytical and organoleptic evaluation of each batch of wine that you want to boast of this denomination.
Before becoming DOCG wines have spent at least five years as DOC and have passed two rigorous chemical and organoleptic tests. The bottles can contain a maximum of 5 liters and must bear the seal of the State, which consists of a Pink tie for wines Rossie, Green for white wines, numbered and assigned to each producer on the basis of the quantity of wine that exceeded quality tests.
DOCG and DOC belong to the European law to the group of quality wine or Quality wines produced in a specified region.
TABLE WINE IGT and for the same European legislation are all qualified as Table wines.
